Dangote Refinery IPO Surpasses MTN, GTCO Digital Records
TLDR
- Dangote Petroleum Refinery's IPO surpassed digital subscription records of MTN Nigeria and GTCO on its first day.
- The offer aims to raise N2.15 trillion by issuing 4.1 billion new shares at N525 each.
- It seeks to democratise ownership and deepen retail participation in Nigeria's capital market.
The ongoing Initial Public Offer (IPO) for Dangote Petroleum Refinery has surpassed digital subscription records set by MTN Nigeria and Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) on its first day. Lanre Buluro, Managing Director of Capital Markets at Chapel Hill Denham, disclosed this achievement shortly after the offer's launch. The four-week offer commenced on September 14, 2026, and is scheduled to conclude on October 13, 2026.
Buluro noted the refinery's IPO achieved in days what previous landmark offers took weeks. Guaranty Trust Holding Company's public offer previously attracted about 150,000 digital investors, while MTN Nigeria's offer saw 120,000 to 130,000 subscribers creating new Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) accounts. Dangote Petroleum Refinery's current subscriptions significantly exceed these figures, indicating a strong early response.
The IPO aims to raise N2.15 trillion by issuing 4.1 billion new ordinary shares at N525 per share, making it one of Africa's largest equity offerings. As a primary issuance, the transaction injects fresh capital into the refinery, not selling existing shares. If fully subscribed, founder Aliko Dangote's beneficial ownership will modestly decline to about 84.34%, with new shares representing roughly 3.3% of the enlarged share capital.
A key objective is to democratise ownership of one of Africa's largest industrial assets and deepen retail participation in Nigeria's capital market. A wider shareholder base is expected to strengthen public support for the refinery. Buluro described the transaction as a financial inclusion initiative, aiming to provide many Nigerians with their first capital market investing experience.
While the offer team initially projected 2 million to 3 million investors, efforts focus on achieving an ambitious target of 10 million investors before closing. The strong early response is attributed to robust digital infrastructure from the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), SEC, and CSCS. An extensive distribution network, including fintech platforms like PiggyVest and MTN MoMo, alongside commercial banks, facilitates widespread participation.
